Chelsea‘s 3-0 dismantling of Burnley on Saturday was enough to convince Joe Cole that Frank Lampard‘s men are among the front-runners for the Premier League title.

The Blues eased through the struggling Turf Moor side with Hakim Ziyech bagging a goal and assist on his Premier League debut, as Timo Werner and Kurt Zouma completed a near-perfect display.

Even with only seven games played this season Lampard had faced tough scrutiny as his £220m haul of summer signings struggled to gel, but the young English coach is starting to make progress in west London

‘It was an exceptional performance and it’s been a steady improvement,’ Cole said on BT Sport pundit duties.

‘Now it looks like Chelsea can make a run of it. It’s been a long time since Chelsea have looked as comfortable defending. Mendy didn’t have a shot to save.

‘It’s good times for the club at the moment and it’s just about consistency. You look at the fixture list and there’s winnable games to come.

‘By Christmas time Chelsea could be right up there. It’s game on.

‘I think there are three or four clubs who can go for the title and Chelsea are certainly one of them.’

The Blues’s next five league games see them face Sheffield United, Newcastle, Tottenham Leeds and Everton amid a packed schedule including Champions League action.

Lampard will hope to continue his side’s form in defence, having kept a clean-sheet in five of their last six matches after the introduction of Edouard Mendy, who is yet to concede a Premier League goal as a Chelsea player.
